Following pilot training in 1915, Kypke served with various units of the German Air Force. In August 1916, he scored his first victory with KEK A followed by 4 more victories as a member of Jasta 41 in 1917. On 27 October 1917, Kypke assumed command of Kest 5 and scored his 6th victory before becoming commander of Jasta 47 on 26 December 1917. He remained with this unit until the end of the war and scored 3 more victories during 1918.
