Hartmann joined the army in 1908. He was wounded in action twice before he transferred to the German Air Force in 1916. After scoring 2 victories with Kasta 15, Hartmann assumed command of Jasta 28 on 6 June 1917 and claimed an additional 5 victories before he was shot down, killed in action by one of 48 Squadron's Bristol Fighters.
