Gandert's third victory was an S.E.5a flown by Edwin Benbow. After scoring 8 victories, Gandert was wounded and captured when he was shot down on 29 September 1918. Later, he served in the Reichswehr then joined the Luftwaffe, rising to the rank of Major General by the end of World War II.
