Gaim joined the army in 1914, served with an artillery regiment at Verdun and transferred to the German Air Force in 1916. He was wounded in action on 6 January 1917 and posted to Jasta 39 in Italy on 27 June 1917. He scored 5 victories with this unit before he was wounded again on 30 December 1917.
