Esswein was wounded in action on 27 November 1917. On 5 February 1918, he shot down Cyril Ball, brother of English ace Albert Ball. Esswein was shot down on 16 July 1918, escaping from his burning plane with the aid of a parachute. Five days later, he was killed in action when his plane went down in flames near Hartennes.
