A Hannover CL.III pilot with FA 295, Baur and his observer flew 160 sorties and downed six French aircraft in 1918. Baur later became Adolf Hitler's personal pilot and attained the rank of Generalobserst in the SS during World War II. Toward the end of the war, he was captured by the Russians and spent 10 years in a Siberian prison camp, losing a leg to gangrene.
