On 1 April 1916, Bassenge transferred to the Fliegertruppe. He was wounded in action on 6 November 1917 and scored 7 victories whilst serving with Jasta 2. Bessenge served in the Luftwaffe during World War II and was captured by the Allies on 10 May 1943 remaining a prisoner of war for the next 4 years.
