Romatet joined the army on 10 October 1912 and transferred to the French Air Service as an observer on 30 November 1916. On 7 September 1917, he began pilot training and was assigned to Escadrille Spa76 on 22 February 1918. After scoring 4 victories, he was given command of Spa165 on 2 August 1918 and scored 3 more victories before the Armistice was signed. During World War II, Romatet attained the rank of General.
 
Legion d'Honneur
"Officer remarkable for his bravery and spirit. He recently formed a new Escadrille de chasse to which he has given magnificent inspiration. Has difficult combats daily at the head of his pilots to whom he sets a constant example. On 28 September [1918] he reported his fifth victory by flaming a balloon. Six citations."
