Shot down twice by anti-aircraft fire during the course of the war, Ortoli joined the army on 2 September 1914. Already possessing a civilian pilot's license, he was assigned to the French Air Service, receiving a Pilot's Brevet on 30 September 1914. Posted to Escadrille MF8 on 15 October 1914, he scored his first victory in April 1915 but was wounded in action on 8 July 1915. Returning to duty on 3 September, he was posted to N31 on 7 October 1915 and scored his second and third victories in June 1916. Reassigned to N77 on 24 September 1916, he remained with this unit only a short time before rejoining N31 on 16 January 1917. Following a promotion in April 1918, he assumed command of Spa57 on 10 May 1918, serving with this unit until the end of the war and scoring eight more victories. Ortoli also served his country during World War II. |
