Matton earned a Military Pilot's Brevet on 14 January 1916. After serving with Escadrille MF20, he joined N57 on 23 July 1916 and scored his first victory just five days later. On 2 October 1916, he assumed command of Escadrille N48 and downed 8 more enemy aircraft before he was killed in action by Josef Jacobs of Jasta 7 in 1917.
