"A pilot beyond compare. By his devotion proven to all and his straightforwardness, he has constantly been a remarkable example to his comrades. During the course of numerous combats in which he engaged regardless of the number of adversaries, he has had his plane hit many times and has reported eight victories. He was seriously wounded recently [15 July 1918] in a combat against overwhelming odds. Amputation of the left leg. Médaille Militaire for feats of war, five citations."
