Garaud entered the French Air Service in 1915 and became a pilot the following year. During the war, he accumulated 495 hours of flight time. On 26 March 1918, he was wounded when a bullet passed through his right lung. He was wounded again on 3 October 1918 when a fragment from an exploding shell hit him in the face. |

PARIS, April 6 (AP)—Major Hector Garaud, French air ace who was credited with bringing down 23 enemy planes during the first World war, was killed yesterday in an airplane accident at Montpelier [sic] where he was serving as an instructor. |
