Wounded four times while serving in cavalry and infantry regiments, Bonneton requested a transfer to the French Air Service in 1916. After training at Juvisy, he was posted to the Eastern Front in 1917, serving in Romania and scoring two victories. In May 1918, he returned to France and was assigned to Spa69, downing five balloons and two enemy aircraft by the end of the war. |

Légion d'Honneur |
"Elite officer, wounded twice in the cavalry, he was transferred at his request to the infantry where he was wounded twice more. Classed as unfit for infantry duty, he requested aviation service. Here he has distinguished himself as a pursuit pilot of the highest order, with admirable strength and spirit. He recently downed his third enemy plane. Six citations." Légion d'Honneur citation, 3 August 1918 |
