Berthelot joined the army on 8 October 1912. Having served with the 3eme Dragons, he began pilot training on 5 November 1916 and received a pilot's brevet (5703) on 18 March 1917. Assigned to Escadrille N15 on 27 July 1917, Berthelot scored eleven victories by the end of the war.
