A resident of Argentina when the war began, Artigau was called to active duty in the infantry on 26 May 1916. In early 1917, he completed pilot training at Tours and Avord and was assigned to Escadrille N15 on 20 June 1917.

"Non-commissioned officer driven by the highest spirit and devotion, which he has rapidly revealed during the course of difficult combats, and daily as a pursuit pilot full of bravery, endurance and skill.
