The son of William and Margaret Wilson, Percy Wilson was born on 11
April 1895 in Edge Hill and baptised on 15 May 1895 in the Church of
England at St. Catherine. His father managed a public house at the Ranelagh Hotel, Chester
Street, Birkenhead. The 1911
England Census lists Percy Wilson, aged 16, employed as a servant
(groom) in Chester, Cheshire, but the birthplace is given as Birkenhead,
Cheshire. Percy joined the Royal Engineers in 1914 (service
number 54064) and rose to the rank of Corporal. He transferred to the Royal Flying
Corps on 17 May 1917. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Wilson embarked
for France on 12 October 1917 and was posted to 28 Squadron on the
following day. Promoted to Flight Commander and Acting Captain on 27
February 1918, Wilson remained with 28 Squadron until he was
posted to Home Establishment on 1 June 1918. A passenger list for a ship
arriving in New York City on 19 December 1919 shows Percy at age 24, a
British citizen, an engineer, with a destination of Detroit, Michigan. His R.F.C. service record
is available at the National Archives, Kew, referencing WO 339/107150;
his Medal Index Card is also available, confirming his service with the
Royal Engineers and the R.F.C., referencing WO 372/22/9988.
