The eldest child of William and Sarah (Jerram) Walkerdine, Harold John Walkerdine was posted to 56 Squadron where he scored seven victories flying the S.E.5a before being wounded on 11 April 1918. The London Gazette announced that Lieutenant Walkerdine was transferred to the unemployed list on 23 March 1919. However, that notification was cancelled in a later issue. On 16 April 1919, he relinquished his commission on account of ill health, contracted whilst on active service. He returned to service with the Royal Air Force during World War II.

Military Cross (MC)
T./2nd Lt. Harold John Walkerdine, Gen. List and R.F.C.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst escorting machines of another squadron, who were engaged on low bombing work, he encountered ten hostile scouts, two of which he succeeded in crashing to earth. He has at all times, by his conspicuous skill and gallantry, set an excellent example to his squadron.
