The son of Thomas William and Margaret Mary (Whitehair) Vigers, Arthur Whitehair Vigers attended Mill Hill School in London before he enlisted in 1908. He served with the Royal Engineers, Territorial Force and was promoted to temporary Lieutenant on 9 December 1914. In 1915, he was mentioned in despatches and was awarded the Military Cross. He was seconded for duty with the Royal Flying Corps on 12 May 1917 and flew as an observer with 15 Squadron. Posted to 87 Squadron in 1918, he scored fourteen victories flying the Sopwith Dolphin. Post-war, he was a tobacco farmer in Rhodesia before emigrating to Australia where he was hired as a pilot by Qantas airlines in 1924 and later served with the Royal Australian Air Force.

   A gallant and skilful airman. During the recent operations whilst leading a formation of eight machines he saw a group of twelve Fokker biplanes; without hesitation he attacked them, and, in the engagement, crashed two and shot down another out of control. Since June last he has crashed three enemy aeroplanes and driven down three out of control.
