From St. Kew in Cornwall, Richard Michael Trevethan, the son of Michael and Clara (Pearce) Trevethan, was born in Utah in the United States but gave his nationality as English. He attended Falmouth Grammar School, Portsmouth Grammar School, and the Imperial College of Science, London. He enlisted in 1914 and was commissioned a temporary second lieutenant on 22 September. In 1917 he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. As an F.E.2d pilot, he scored twelve victories before being wounded in action on 18 September 1917. He was granted a permanent commission in the rank of Flying Officer on 1 August 1919.
