The son of William Charles and Kate (nee Dunkley) Stanton, Frederick Cecil Stanton was from Emberton, Buckinghamshire where his parents ran the post office. He enlisted on 2 September 1914 and served in France from 22 July 1915 to 16 March 1917 with the 6th Battalion of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Promoted to sergeant on 3 September 1916 and temporary 2nd Lieutenant (on probation) on 26 September 1917, Stanton then completed pilot training and was posted to 24 Squadron on 18 March 1918 and 22 Squadron on 29 May 1918. With the latter unit he scored seven victories flying Bristol Fighters. |
