The son of James and Mary Robb, James Milne Robb was educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh and Durham University. He served with the 4th Northumberland Fusiliers before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps. Captain Robb received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 4116 on 10 August 1916. Posted to 32 Squadron, he scored his first victory flying a D.H.2 in 1917. With 92 Squadron in 1918, he claimed six more enemy aircraft flying the S.E.5a. A close friend of Arthur Coningham, Robb was wounded in action on 11 March 1917 and 16 August 1918.

   This officer has destroyed seven enemy aircraft, and under his brilliant leadership his patrols have accounted for numerous others. On 13th October he attacked and silenced three hostile howitzers which were in action.
