Commissioned in November 1914, John Bowley Quested began flying as an observer with 11 Squadron in April 1915. Following flight training in 1916, he became an F.E.2b pilot. On 27 December 1916, he and his observer engaged Jasta 1 near Chérisy. After shooting down Gustav Leffers, Quested was attacked and forced down behind British lines at Wancourt by Wilhelm Cymera. Although his observer was wounded, Quested was uninjured and both men returned to duty the following month. Shortly after joining 40 Squadron in July 1917, Quested was injured in a crash that effectively ended his flying career for the remainder of the war. In October 1917, he returned to France and was given command of 1 Aerial Gunnery Range before being wounded and sent back to England in February 1918. When he recovered, he assumed command of 2 Aeroplane Supply Depot for the duration of the war. In 1919, Quested assumed command of 79 Squadron, serving in Germany and India before leaving the Royal Air Force to become a farmer in East Anglia.
