Following service in the London Regiment, Pratt was commissioned into the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in October 1915. He transferred into the Royal Flying Corps during February 1917 and joined 48 Squadron following pilot training. During the summer of 1917 he flew Bristol Fighters and was most often accompanied by Lt. Hugh Owen as his observer/gunner.
