The son of John William and Laura Alice Medlicott, of Ealing, and the brother of 2nd Lieutenant S. N. Medlicott, Royal Field Artillery, who was killed at Loos on October 6th, 1915, Harold William Medlicott obtained his commission in the R.F.A. in September 1914, shortly before he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. He received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 1042 on a Maurice Farman biplane at Brooklands on 18 January 1915. That year, he proved himself to be a daring and skilful pilot, and was successful in bringing down a number of enemy machines, for which he was mentioned in despatches. On 9 November 1915, while on special work, a blinding snowstorm and consequent engine trouble forced him to land within the German lines and he was captured. Interned in various prison camps, he made several unsuccessful attempts to escape and was killed while attempting to escape from the prison camp at Bad Colberg (Sachsen Meiningen) on or about 19 May 1918. He was 23 years old.
