The son of Stanley and Amy (Harris) Le Blanc-Smith, Maurice Le Blanc-Smith received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 1440 on a Maurice Farman biplane at military school, Brooklands on 14 July 1915. As a bomber and reconnaissance pilot during 1915 and 1916, he flew the Airco D.H.2 and Vickers Gunbus while serving with 18 Squadron. In 1918, he was reassigned to 73 Squadron, where he scored all of his victories as a Sopwith Camel pilot.
