The son of James and Ann Eleanor (Stanger) Langlands, David Langlands served with the Royal Sussex Regiment before he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in the summer of 1916. He first served as an observer with 6 Squadron and on 7 April 1917, 2nd Lieutenant Langlands received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 4443 on a Maurice Farman biplane at military school, Ruislip. Posted to 23 Squadron as a pilot, he scored five victories flying SPADs before he was wounded in action on 25 July 1917. He was transferred to the unemployed list on 11 January 1919. |
