After serving with the Leicester Regiment, Robert Kirby Kirkman, the son of Annie E. Kirkman, transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Posted to 20 Squadron in the summer of 1917, he scored eight victories before he and his observer, John Herbert Hedley, were captured on 27 March 1918. Their Bristol F.2b was shot down near Foucaucourt by Karl Gallwitz of Jasta Boelcke.

   For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led a patrol of eleven aeroplanes, and through his skilful manoeuvring and leadership the patrol destroyed four enemy scouts and drove down three more out of control. On several other occasions he has driven down and destroyed hostile machines, and has always set a fine example of courage and determination.
