Edward Hoare served with the Royal Naval Air Service (service no. 15955) and the Royal Air Force (service no. 215955) during the Great War.
After serving as an Air Gunner aboard an Airship (NS1), he was posted to 88 Squadron where he scored 7 victories as a Bristol F.2b observer. He was wounded in action on 17 August 1918 and in October 1918, he was shot down and wounded again, remaining in hospital until after the end of the war. His Distinguished Flying Medal was gazetted on 1 January 1919. In 1939, Edward Hoare rejoined the Royal Air Force and was posted to a squadron based in Northern Ireland. He served as aircrew for over a year before his age was revealed and he left the service. He spent the remainder of the war as an ARP in Forest Gate, East London. |
