With 20 Squadron in the summer of 1918, John Hills, the son of John and Alice Hills, scored seven victories as an observer flying Bristol Fighters. Shot down by Jasta 56 on 14 August 1918, his pilot, David Esplin Smith, was killed but 2nd Lieutenant Hills survived and was captured.
