Enroute to assume command of 60 Squadron, James McCudden was killed in a flying accident at Auxi-le Château when he stopped briefly to ask for directions to the aerodrome at Boffles. The official explanation for the crash was controversial, concluding that his S.E.5a's engine died during take-off and McCudden made the fundamental error of turning back toward the aerodrome. The following day, not far from where he died, McCudden was buried at Wavan cemetery. |
