Educated at Stamford and Leeds Central High Schools, John Herbert Hall, worked as an apprentice motor fitter before joining the Royal Flying Corps as an N.C.O. Observer on 3 September 1917. Promoted to Sergeant Mechanic on 17 May 1918, he was posted to France on 26 May 1918 with 22 Squadron (Bristol Fighters) and scored 5 victories. Hall returned to England on 22 March 1919 and transferred to the Royal Air Force Reserve on 14 May 1919.
