With the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, William Thompson Gilson's temporary commission as a Sub-Lieutenant was gazetted on 10 August 1915. Sub-Lieutenant Gilson became a temporary Lieutenant for duty with the Royal Flying Corps on 6 January 1917, with seniority from 29 October 1916. As an observer flying the F.E.2d with 20 Squadron, he shared five victories with his pilots.
