Wilfred Bertie Giles, the son of Henry and Emily Giles, was wounded in 1916 while serving with the Somerset Light Infantry on the Somme Front. When he recovered from his wounds, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. As an observer with 43 Squadron, he claimed his first victory from a Sopwith 1½ Strutter. On 18 October 1917, 2nd Lieutenant Giles received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 5337 on a Maurice Farman biplane at military school, Ruislip. Posted to 74 Squadron in France, he claimed four more victories flying a Sopwith Camel before he was injured in a crash on 6 August 1917. He later married the widow of Ira Jones. |
