Gentleman Cadet Harold Ross Eycott-Martin, from the Royal Military Academy, was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 27 October 1915. He served with the Royal Engineers before he was attached to the Royal Flying Corps. On the Italian front with 66 Squadron, he scored eight victories flying the Sopwith Camel in 1918.
On 30 March 1918, near Mansuè, Italy, Eycott-Martin, Peter Carpenter, and Alan Jerrard attacked five Albatros scouts. They then attacked an Austrian aerodrome. In an epic battle with nineteen enemy fighters, Eycott-Martin was attacked by eight of the enemy and Jerrard went to his aid, fighting the enemy alone until Carpenter and Eycott-Martin escaped. His Camel riddled by bullets and his controls shot away, Jerrard was forced to land and surrender. For his actions that day, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
