After serving as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Army Service Corps in the trenches of France, John Edgcumbe Doyle joined the Royal Flying Corps in September 1916. From 56 Squadron he was posted to 60 Squadron as a flight commander on 17 July 1918. After scoring 9 victories with the S.E.5a, he was shot down by Egon Koepsch near Cambrai on 5 September 1918. Doyle was captured and his wounded leg was amputated. In magazine articles written in the 1930s, Doyle claimed that Koepsch shot him down and then proceeded to strafe him on the ground. Post-war, Doyle received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 9434 on a D.H.60 Moth at Haldon Aerodrome & School of Flying on 6 September 1930.

Living in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire in 1901. Listed in some sources as John Edgcombe Doyle.
