Commissioned in 1915, James George Coombe served with the Lincoln Regiment until his transfer to the Royal Flying Corps in August of the same year. After serving as an observer with 21 Squadron, he received pilot training and was posted to 29 Squadron where he flew Nieuport Scouts. Scoring eight victories, he was promoted to flight commander in March 1918.
