The son of Colonel Charles Bury and Etheldred St. Barbe Collins, Valentine St. Barbe Collins was enrolled at Wellington College in 1911. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1916 and served with 45 Squadron before being injured on 29 November 1916. A Brisfit observer, he scored his first three victories with 48 Squadron in September 1917. Posted to 22 Squadron in 1918, he scored seven more victories before he and his Australian pilot, Capt. Brian Laidley Dowling, were killed in action. He was 24 years old.
