Francis Stephen Bowles served with the Royal Air Force in Italy, scoring 5 victories as a Sopwith Camel pilot. Joining the Independent Air Force in France toward the end of the war, he was shot down by Jasta 80 on 3 November 1918 and captured. During World War II, Flight Lieutenant Bowles served as an accounts officer.
