Serving with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 2nd Lieutenant William Arthur Bond received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 3913 on a Maurice Farman biplane at Military School, Birmingham on 23 November 1916. Wounded in the Dardenelles in 1916, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was posted to 40 Squadron in 1917. In 1918, Bond's wife published his letters home from the front in "An Airman's Wife." |

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. While on patrol he attacked at close range a hostile machine, which was sent down out of control. Shortly afterwards he attacked another, which stalled and fell sideways. On another date he flew over the lines at about 50 feet and attacked a hostile balloon, bringing it down in flames.
