The son of John Stanley Wilson Blackett, John Basil Blackett was a single, 28 year old racehorse trainer and jockey living in Australia when he enlisted on 11 August 1914 at Sydney. He'd previously served with the 2nd Bucks, the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corp and was on leave from the Ceylon Mounted Rifles. He was wounded at Gallipoli on 22 August 1915 and invalided from Malta to England at the end of September 1915.
