John William Aldred was promoted to temporary Second Lieutenant whilst serving with The Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment) on 29 November 1915. After serving with the 11th King's Own Royal Lancashire Regiment, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916. Flying the B.E.2c as an observer with 5 Squadron, he scored 2 victories in February 1917. As a Sopwith Camel pilot, he scored 3 more victories with 70 Squadron and 3 more victories with 3 Squadron. |

For conspicuous gallantry during an aerial combat with two hostile scouts. He drove one of the hostile machines down and succeeded in driving the other hostile machine back over the enemy's lines. He displayed great courage and determination throughout.
