After serving with the 19th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Joseph Eskill Hallonquist, the son of John Hallonquist, was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps on 2 November 1917. In January 1918 he was posted to 28 Squadron in Italy. There he scored 5 victories flying the Sopwith Camel. On 29 October 1918, he was captured when his aircraft was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. He left the Royal Air Force on 2 December 1919.
