A surveyor by trade, Eric Charlton Gilroy enlisted at Medicine Hat, Alberta on 31 December 1914. After serving with the 3rd Regiment of the Canadian Mounted Rifles, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was promoted to temporary 2nd Lieutenant (on probation) on 13 August 1917. Posted to 11 Squadron as an observer, he scored 7 victories flying the Bristol F.2b. Post-war he became an American citizen and lived in Michigan.
