The son of Angus and Helen Gillanders, John Gordon Gillanders was posted to 18 Squadron on 14 March 1918. He scored 5 victories that summer flying the D.H.4. In 1938 he became a justice of the supreme court of Ontario and, in 1945, the chief justice of Canada appointed him chairman of the arbitral tribunal which dealt with Saskatchewan's claim to receive payments under the Dominion provincial agreement. He died a year later at the age of 50. |

This officer has carried out twenty-nine successful bombing raids, sixteen photographic flights and thirty-six econnaissances, and his work has been admirable, characterised by marked ability. In the course of these numerous flights he has never hesitated to engage enemy aircraft, thereby on many occasions materially assisting his formation.
