The son of Rev. E. A. Davis, Ernest Francis Hartley Davis enlisted in the 249th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in November 1916. He was promoted to temporary 2nd Lieutenant (on probation) on 19 August 1917. An S.E.5a pilot serving with 41 Squadron, he scored seven victories during the war.
