During the last three years of World War I, the Belgian Air Service (Aviation Militaire Belge) pilots and observers were hampered by aircraft and armaments that were generally inferior to its Allies as well as the enemy. Despite these obstacles, the Belgian Air Service produced six aces, one of whom was the highest scoring balloon-buster of the war: Willy Coppens.

Coppens de Houthulst, Willy Omer François Jean 37
De Meulemeester, Andre 11
Thieffry, Edmond 10
Jacquet, Fernand 7
DuBois d'Aische, Adolphe 6
Olieslagers, Jan 6
