After serving in the Medical Corps, Robert William McKenzie transferred to the Australian Flying Corps on 2 December 1916. Serving first with 41 Squadron, he joined 68 Squadron in September 1917. Flying a D.H.5, he scored his first victory on 1 December 1917, shooting down an Albatros D.V. In 1918, his squadron was re-designated 2 Squadron in the AFC and re-equipped with the S.E.5a. With this aircraft, McKenzie scored five more victories in the spring of 1918. McKenzie died in a boating accident in 1945.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As a result of engaging hostile aircraft during four months, he on four occasions has destroyed a total of four hostile machines. He has also carried out numerous low-flying reconnaissances, in which he has bombed and engaged with machine-gun fire enemy formations. He has at all times displayed marked determination and devotion to duty.
