Rejected for medical reasons in Australia, Edwards joined the army in England on 4 August 1915. In September 1916, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was posted to 32 Squadron in May 1917. Flying the D.H.5, he scored five victories that year but experienced health problems shortly after he joined 92 Squadron in 1918.
